Elon Musk Unveils xAI, His Groundbreaking New AI Company

Elon Musk has recently unveiled a new venture called xAI, as stated on the company’s website, with a mission to “comprehend the fundamental essence of the universe.” While specific details remain undisclosed, the team has announced that they will share further information via an audio broadcast on Twitter scheduled for July 14, 2023.

Elon Musk Unveils xAI, His Groundbreaking New AI Company

Leading the company is Elon Musk himself, alongside individuals from prominent organizations such as DeepMind (a subsidiary of Alphabet), OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Twitter, and Tesla. Among the notable team members is Igor Babushkin, a former employee of DeepMind. Their collective expertise encompasses projects like DeepMind’s AlphaCode neural network, OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. xAI has also initiated a recruitment drive to attract new talent.

Notably, Dan Hendricks, the Executive Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Security and an employee of xAI, issued an open letter in March 2023, co-signed by Musk, advocating for a halt to large-scale AI experiments. Musk has consistently voiced concerns about AI being a significant threat to civilization and criticized OpenAI for its perceived lack of transparency and overly commercial approach to neural network development.

The xAI website clarifies that although it isn’t affiliated with X Corp (which includes Twitter), it intends to maintain close collaboration with the social media platform. The formation of xAI was initially reported by the Financial Times and The Verge in April 2023. Musk himself confirmed working on an alternative to the ChatGPT chatbot, named TruthGPT, which he described as an AI service dedicated to maximizing truth-seeking and understanding the nature of the universe.

While Elon Musk was indeed one of the co-founders of OpenAI, he made the decision to depart from the company in 2018, citing potential future conflicts of interest.
